The com gedenksteen was erected in memory of two people in hiding who were killed here on 20 September 1944, just two days before the liberation, by German paratroopers. Willem Flipse and Harm Freericks were suspected of being helpers to the resistance organisation Partizanen Actie Nederland (PAN), which operated in East Brabant. During Operation ‘Market Garden’ (an Allied offensive from 17 to 26 September 1944), this organisation assisted paratroopers who had landed.
It is believed that Flipse and Freericks were caught whilst searching a British ‘carrier’, with one of their blue overalls and a PAN armband serving as clues to the occupying forces that they were associated with the partisans. The monument was unveiled on 22 September 1992 by its initiator and creator, Fons Roijmans, in the presence of former members of the group of people in hiding to which the two victims belonged.
