The Germans had deployed a great deal of anti-aircraft artillery in this wooded area. Five Skytrains were shot down over Bladel, Casteren, Netersel and Hoogeloon . Crew members and paratroopers lost their lives in the process. Soldiers who managed to jump out of their burning aircraft in time were often rescued on the ground by members of the resistance. People on the ground were also killed by crashing aircraft.
The Liberation Route Brabant tells the story of the liberation, but also shows what the Second World War meant for ordinary people in Brabant. Eight cycle routes of around forty kilometres, spread across North Brabant, take you past ‘Brabant Remembers’ stories, audio kiosks from the Liberation Route Europe, monuments and museums, which together illustrate the impact of the war on North Brabant. Along the way, a location-based app brings the stories to life.
