Cartierheide route 13.0 km
The Cartierheide is managed by Staatsbosbeheer. Forest ranger Erik Schram is enthusiastic about his area: “On the Cartierheide , you’ll not only find panoramic views and a sense of freedom, but you may also come across various animal species. The small pearl-bordered fritillary, the hobby and the black woodpecker fly about, and in summer you’ll see the viviparous lizard passing by. When the sun rises or dusk falls and you’re very still, the roe deer will show themselves. The smooth snake also slithers about, though you’ll need to walk very gently and quietly to spot it along your path. At the large fen, you can look out over the water and its inhabitants. This is where I most enjoy standing still. By the water’s edge, you have a good view of all sorts of birds and waterfowl. Spring and summer are the breeding seasons, and during your walk you’ll find a large colony of gulls by the fen. August has its own beauty. That’s when you come to see the heather in bloom.” Source: Staatbosbeheer
