Hapert ’s ‘Graanmolen’ can certainly be described as unique, particularly in this region. It is, in fact, a round stone ground-sailer. This means that the sails reach right down to the ground, and it is the only one of its kind in the south of North Brabant.
History of the mill:
The ‘Graanmolen’ has never had a predecessor at the spot where it now stands. Before this mill was built, the inhabitants of Hapert had to rely on mills in the surrounding area to grind their grain. In 1896, Francis Sanders, a miller from South Limburg, purchased a plot of land on the south-western edge of the village. The mill was built using materials from dismantled mills elsewhere (Groningen and Friesland). The bricks were fired in a nearby field kiln. In 1902, J.A.F. Willems, the son of a miller from Diessen, bought the mill from a miller from Netersel, who took over its operation and later, during the war years, became its owner.
In 1970, he sold the mill to the Municipality of Hoogeloon and surrounding areas, now the municipality of Bladel. Following a thorough restoration in 1972, costing 115,000 guilders, the exterior of the mill was once again in good condition, after which work began on the interior in 1974.
More recently, in 20202, the mill was fitted with new sails, of the ‘van Bussel’ type, and the struts and tail beam were also replaced.
Current use of the mill
The mill is still used for grinding grain and maize. Volunteer millers keep the mill running on many days throughout the year, and it is therefore open to visitors.
The mill is a listed building.
