The ‘ Heilig Hart ’ refers to the heart of Jesus Christ, which symbolises his immense love for humanity. The 1930s were the heyday of Roman Catholic life, and this was also true of devotion to the Sacred Heart ( Heilig Hart). At that time, the parish of Bladel also wanted a statue of the Sacred Heart. Two parishioners dug deep into their pockets for this purpose and each donated 1,000 guilders, around €450. The stone sculpture by the sculptor Vos, placed on a plinth in an open chapel with a wooden roof, depicts Jesus Christ. He wears a long robe with a cloak draped over it. With his open right hand, he makes a gesture of blessing. His left hand rests on his Heilig Hart.
Another interesting fact
: Interest in the Heilig Hart endured for many years. Until 1965, schoolchildren would lay a floral tribute every year on the feast day of the Heilig Hart, the third Friday after Whitsun.
