Discover its story
If you look closely and walk around the tower, you’ll discover not only the carillon, which consists of 24 bells, but also two moving dioramas. Both scenes take us back several centuries in time. The sculpture at the front tells the story of Dirk I and Charles the Simple, who signed an important charter at Pladella Villa Castle in the year 922. The full story is told by the group of sculptures on the Markt. In the diorama at the rear, we go back ‘only’ four centuries. In this scene, the monks of Postel Abbey in Belgium are distributing bread to the people of Bladel. The infamous ‘ Zwarte Kaat ’ watches closely. The Abbey had always had a close bond with Bladel, and in hard times the monks helped the people of Bladel wherever they could. Despite the raids by ‘ Zwarte Kaat ’ and her band of robbers, they continued to assist the poor. What a display of charity.
